Common sea glass

The bread and butter of every beachcomber's tray.

  • White, kelly green and brown dominate the haul.
  • Heavy frost from decades of saltwater hydration.
  • Tiny C-shaped micro-fissures across the surface.
A bit of history

Most everyday sea glass comes from beer, wine and soda bottles produced en masse during the 19th and 20th centuries. The frosty surface is the result of seawater (pH 8+) slowly leaching soda and lime from the glass โ€” a process that takes anywhere from 20 to 50 years.

Milk glass

Opaque, milky-white, often with a satin sheen.

  • Solid white โ€” not just frosted clear glass.
  • Slightly translucent when held up to a strong light.
  • Often thicker than typical bottle glass.
A bit of history

Originally developed in 16th-century Venice, milk glass exploded in popularity in Victorian-era America as an affordable alternative to porcelain. Common sources include cold cream jars (Pond's, Noxzema), candy dishes, lamp shades and dresser sets. Frosted milk glass is genuinely uncommon on most beaches.

Depression glass

Pastel pinks, greens and ambers from the Great Depression.

  • Soft pink, jadeite green, amber yellow or pale blue.
  • Often shows molded patterns โ€” flowers, geometric panels, scrolls.
  • Thinner than commercial bottles; rings clear when tapped.
A bit of history

Mass-produced and given away free in cereal boxes, gas stations and movie theaters during the Depression as a small luxury for struggling families. Major makers included Hocking, Federal, Indiana Glass and Jeannette. Beach-tumbled fragments still carry traces of those embossed patterns.

Uranium / Vaseline glass

Pale yellow-green by day, neon green under UV light.

How to identify
  • Yellowish-green hue (sometimes called 'canary').
  • Glows bright neon green under a 365nm UV blacklight โ€” the dead giveaway.
  • Geiger counters will register a faint click.
A bit of history

Made with 2โ€“25% uranium oxide before WWII halted civilian uranium use. Production largely stopped in 1943 when uranium was diverted to the Manhattan Project. Truly beach-found uranium glass is rare and fluoresces under UV exactly the same as the day it was made.

Bottle glass โ€” soda, beer, soda water

Curved, embossed, sometimes with a maker mark on the base.

  • Curvature suggests a bottle even after weathering.
  • Embossed script or letters survive the surf surprisingly well.
  • Bases may carry a maker mark (Owens-Illinois diamond-oval-I is the most common on US beaches).
A bit of history

The 1915 Coca-Cola contour bottle ('hobble skirt') is one of the most identifiable shards โ€” its distinctive curve and embossed script can be spotted in even small fragments. Pepsi shards from the 1940sโ€“60s carry their flowing script. 7UP and old milk bottles round out the everyday cast.

Mason & fruit jars

Aqua-blue and clear jars from the canning era.

How to identify
  • Aqua-blue tint is the giveaway for pre-1920s pieces.
  • Embossed names like 'Ball', 'Ball Perfect Mason', 'Kerr' or 'Atlas'.
  • Thicker walls than soda bottles.
A bit of history

John Landis Mason patented the screw-top jar in 1858, transforming home food preservation. The aqua color comes from natural iron impurities in early sand โ€” by the 1920s, manufacturers had purified their formulas and switched to clear glass. Each Mason jar shard is a fragment of American kitchen history.

Cobalt blue medicine glass

Deep blue meant 'do not drink'.

  • Rich, saturated blue โ€” not the lighter cornflower of soda bottles.
  • Often thicker walls and small bottle sizes.
  • May carry maker marks like Maryland Glass Corp's circle-M.
A bit of history

Pharmacists used cobalt blue as a visual warning code: blue meant poison or for-external-use-only. Bromo-Seltzer, Vicks VapoRub, Milk of Magnesia, Noxzema and countless apothecary bottles all carried this color. The deep blue also helped block UV light from degrading sensitive contents.

Red sea glass

One in five thousand finds.

  • True red, not amber or rust-stained clear glass.
  • Often heavier than expected for the size.
  • Hold to light: it stays red, not brown or orange.
A bit of history

Red glass was historically expensive to make โ€” true red required gold or copper added to the molten batch. Most red sea glass originates from pre-1950s automobile tail lights, ship warning lanterns, Schlitz beer bottles, art glass and Anchor Hocking 'Royal Ruby' tableware from the 1930sโ€“40s.

Orange & yellow

Often considered the rarest colors of all.

  • True orange (not amber-brown).
  • True yellow (not citron green-yellow).
  • Typically smaller fragments โ€” these were never bottle glass.
A bit of history

Orange came from cadmium and selenium and was used in boat warning lights, art glass and a small slice of Depression-era tableware. True yellow turns up in vintage tableware and select art pieces. Both colors broke down chemically over time, making intact shards genuinely scarce โ€” about 1 in 10,000 finds.

'Pirate glass' (black)

Looks like a stone. Hold it to the sun.

How to identify
  • Reads as solid black or very dark gray on the beach.
  • Held to bright light, reveals deep olive-green or dark amber.
  • Thick, chunky โ€” heavier than modern glass for its size.
A bit of history

Despite the romantic nickname, 'pirate glass' is simply very thick, very dark olive or amber bottle glass from the 17thโ€“19th centuries โ€” used for liquor, ale and case gin bottles. The high iron and manganese content made it nearly opaque in daylight. These are some of the oldest pieces you'll ever find.

End-of-day glass (multis)

Multi-colored swirls from glassblowers' last batch of the day.

  • Two or more colors swirled together in a single piece.
  • Often irregular shapes with flowing color boundaries.
  • Most famous source: the Seaham coast in northeast England.
A bit of history

When Victorian-era glassblowers reached the end of a shift, they'd combine whatever leftover colors remained in their pots and dump the result into the sea. The Candlish, Londonderry and Seaham bottle works (1853โ€“1921) made northeast England's beaches the world's premier hunting ground for multi-colored 'end of day' shards.

Marbles

Children's toys and spray-paint agitators frosted by the waves.

  • Spherical (or close to it after weathering).
  • Often with internal swirls or 'cat's eye' centers.
  • Frosted exterior from years of surf-tumbling.
A bit of history

Some are turn-of-the-century children's toys lost from beach picnics. Many more are 'clearies' โ€” clear glass marbles used as agitators inside spray-paint cans, which washed into the ocean from coastal landfills. Akro Agate and Christensen Agate marbles from the 1920sโ€“30s are particularly prized when they're still identifiable.

Glass fishing floats

Hollow orbs that once held up fishing nets.

How to identify
  • Curved sections that suggest a hollow sphere.
  • Teal, sea-green or aqua are most common.
  • May still bear the seal mark from the original blowing pontil.
A bit of history

Norwegian fishermen first used glass floats in the 1840s; by the 20th century, Japanese, Russian and US Pacific Northwest fleets had adopted them. Plastic replaced glass in the 1960sโ€“70s. Floats released in Asia decades ago still occasionally complete the journey across the Pacific to wash up intact in Alaska, Oregon and Washington.

In the field

When, where and how to hunt sea glass

Identification is half the game. The other half is knowing when the beach is giving up its glass โ€” and how to read the shoreline once you're there.

When to hunt

Timing is everything. Sea glass appears where the water has just left it.

  • Low tide exposes the most glass โ€” spring and king tides expose even more.
  • Hunt the window 1โ€“2 hours before and after low tide.
  • Go after storms or strong onshore winds โ€” churned surf redeposits buried shards.
  • Winter and early spring turn beaches over and thin out the competition.
  • Early morning light makes wet glass glint before other hunters arrive.

Where to look on the beach

The shoreline is a sorting machine. Learn to read where it drops the glass.

  • The wrack line โ€” that ribbon of seaweed and debris โ€” is the single richest strip.
  • Pebble and gravel patches, not fine sand: glass tumbles with stones its own size.
  • Points, coves and eddies where current slows and deposits everything it carried.
  • The base of eroding bluffs and near old seawalls where historic dumps are giving way.
  • Just below the tide line in ankle-deep water on calm, clear days.

How to hunt

A few small habits massively improve your hit rate.

  • Walk slowly with the sun at your back so glass catches the light.
  • Scan a narrow band at your feet โ€” not the whole beach at once.
  • Zig-zag along the wrack line rather than walking a straight line.
  • Kneel or crouch in productive pockets; perspective reveals shards you missed standing.
  • After rain, colors pop against wet stones โ€” an easy time to spot cobalts and greens.

Saltwater vs. freshwater sea glass

Same idea, different chemistry โ€” and it shows in every shard.

  • Ocean glass: heavy frost, C-shaped pitting, deeper patina from salt (~pH 8) over decades.
  • Great Lakes and river glass: softer frost, gentler edges โ€” freshwater weathers slower.
  • In the same timespan, ocean shards will typically look years older than freshwater ones.
  • Both are absolutely collectible โ€” just calibrate your eye for the local finish.

Prime hunting regions

Where history dumped enough glass to still be washing up today.

  • US East Coast: Cape Cod, coastal Maine (Gloucester, Portland), Long Island Sound, the Chesapeake.
  • US West Coast: Fort Bragg and Benicia in California, Puget Sound in Washington.
  • Great Lakes: Lake Erie shorelines (OH, PA, NY), Lake Michigan (Chicago, Sheboygan), old port towns on Lake Superior.
  • UK & Europe: Seaham, England โ€” the world's premier beach for multi-color 'end of day' shards.
  • Historic clues: eroding shoreline dumpsites, rivers that carried factory waste (Merrimack, Penobscot, Delaware), and shipwreck-prone coasts like Cape Cod.

Ethics & etiquette

Leave the beach better than you found it โ€” future hunters are counting on you.

  • Fill in any holes you dig so the beach is safe for the next visitor.
  • Respect private beaches, posted signage and local collection limits.
  • Never collect from protected shorelines or historic wreck sites without permission.

Keep it, or send it back

There's an old beachcombing wish: if a piece still has sharp edges, the water isn't finished with it yet, and it isn't meant for you. Some hunters only keep perfectly round, fully frosted pieces. Our rule is gentler: no sharp edges. If a find is smooth to the touch, it's yours to take home. If it still bites, say a good wish and toss it back to the ocean, lake or river. It will come back softer, someday, for someone.

A final tip for the field

Look at shapes, not just colors. Sea glass covered in dry white patina blends in with pebbles and shells โ€” but unnatural geometry (squares, triangles, bottle-neck curves) gives it away every time.
